Flooded is a creative anthology of fiction and creative nonfiction devoted to brain injuries.
The anthology has three main goals:
Why does the world need this anthology?
There is still a glaring lack of concussion awareness, in the athletic community and otherwise. I was a Division I college athlete, and I had no idea how serious concussions could be—until it happened to me.
January 2016 I took a blow to the helmet sliding into second. I finished practice, unaware that it would be my last. Over the next four months, the injury took my abilities to read, write, walk, and speak. But I couldn't explain to you, here, what it was really like. What I can do is show you, through stories.
Oftentimes, concussion survivors either don’t know how to express their experiences or don’t have an outlet to do so. This anthology solves both problems. Writers and readers know that telling stories is one of the best ways to truly convey emotions and experiences.
What will this thing look like?
The anthology will be published as a 200-page paperback, with cover art commissioned from a talented artist. It will be filled with the words and stories of about 20 contributors.
Contributors? What do they get?
It is important to pay writers the true value of their work, in order to both create an outstanding anthology and to maintain a strong literary community. To that end, minimum payment will be $0.02/word, but I would love to offer $0.06/word, paid on acceptance. Submissions will be open to anyone, whether they are a victim, a friend of a victim, or someone who has done the research in order to present an accurate depiction of brain injuries. All submissions will be read blind, so that race, gender, age, and background play no part in the selection process.
